Keith Hawkins PARS524

Keith “The Hawk” Hawkins, a professional drummer and co-host of The Loudini Rock and Roll Circus with Lou Lombardi and Lily V. Sixx joins Bill to talk about both the PGH & NOLA music scenes as well as his musical history. Segment 1 with Keith Hawkins How did you get hooked up with Lou and the Loudini Rock and Roll Circus. What bands did you play in, in Pittsburgh? Keith compares the drummers in the New Orleans and Pittsburgh scenes. Do you have a steady gig in NOLA, or do you fill in a lot? What is your current favorite whiskey? – asked by Jeff Yeckel If you could follow any band around for a year to learn from them, which band would you follow? If 10 years from now, kids are flipping through their social studies books and they find a you in the book, why is Keith Hawkins in the book? What would your dream gig be? If you were in a crowd and being pulled up on stage, who would be your “Dave Grohl”? We talked about Black Laurel‘s album, Tales from the Motherland that Keith recorded on. Segment 2 with Keith How do the 2 scenes compare? (Pittsburgh and New Orleans) What has been the oddest place that you’ve ever played in either scene? We talked a little bit about Chris “Thunderwolf” Dodson’s Wolf’s Customs company. If you could sit on a bench for a hour and talk to anyone from the history of music and ask them only 1 question, how would that go down? If you were going to build a band to manage based on both the local scenes that you’ve been a part of, who would you put in the band, what band are they currently in, and what genre would they play? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8kBINx0RKY

A Wright of Passage

Lots of music and information for you in this episode. I took a moment to talk about the passing of Cliff from KGB. He was an integral part of our scene and he will be missed. I also did a segment that I titled A Wright of Passage. In this segment I featured songs from Step 11, (kaj), and skell. the link between these songs is that Walter Wright sang lead vocals on all of them. You can hear the progression of his vocals and see how he got to where he is now with what I consider to be the best metal band in the Pittsburgh area. You can read a cd review for their “Everything’s Fine” EP on our other site AK Music Scene. They are currently looking for a drummer to finalize their lineup. You can e-mail Mikey Palone if you think you have what it takes. We featured tracks from: Sofachrome, Tony Marinacci, Camp Element, Silk 9, Homicide Black, Step 11, (kaj), skell, KGB, Dethlehem, Divine Tragedy We featured the following upcoming concerts: May 13: Rock for Life: Spring Fling – Leechburg Moose – $5 Members/$10 Qualified Guests Big house Pete MonaLisa Smile a common crown Heidi & The Hellcats June 10: Feel the Fire Fest 5 – $20 preshow/$25 at the gates – 1314 Hebron Rd SE, Heath, OH 43056-1040 Saliva Xfactor1 Scars like Mine Waragon one in the Chamber After the fall Managed Chaos Iron Head Inc Corrosive Vengence Ribcage Infidel July 7 & 8: Gigaroo 2017 – $20 – Iselin Ballfield Friday July 7 Homicide Black Zone 8 East End Kill the Drama Shattered a commmon crown JL Cook Acoustic Saturday July 8 After the Fall Silk 9 The Hellfire Club Flashback Mojo Filter Here and Now Transcendence Post Traumatik OverMyDeadBody Trigger Happy SuffaCate

Rock Charities

One thing that I have always admired about our local music scene is the bands’ willingness to give back to the community through benefit concerts. In this episode, I am joined by special co-host A Pro Radio‘s John “The American Hilljack” Lane. John is not only a staunch supporter of the Akron and Western PA Local Scene’s but he is the front man of Akron’s The Hellfire Club. John has played in a ton of charity shows, so we’ll be using his experience as the background for our show. Tune into this episode to learn more about these shows and why musicians are so willing to help out. John Vento, Chris Dittman, and Ozz all joined us in this episode to talk about their respective shows and charities. Rock for Life 17 Back in April we did a show on the history of the Rock for Life Concert Series, be sure to check it out as well. For up-to-date information about lupus or to learn how you can help, visit www.lupuspa.org. Zoe’s New Beginnings Zoe’s New Beginnings is a pittsburgh area based non profit organization dedicated to helping parents of premature babies during their first few days at home. We supply the parents with a basket of essential needs. This was created after our daughter, Zoe Joan, was born 8 weeks premature in 2007. We learned along the way the struggles of raising a premature child, and are now making it our mission to help equip future parents for what lies ahead. Zoe is now a healthy 3-year old beautiful, very intelligent little girl, but still deals with problems due to prematurity. If you need someone to help you through this, you are not alone! We want to help YOU in any way we can A Concert for Anna In April 2008, Anna Lee Piroch was diagnosed with cervical cancer. The original Concert For Anna was put together by the local music community, of which Anna was an avid fan, as a way to help her pay her bills while she was unable to work as she battled the disease. Anna knew of the show to be held for her over Labor Day weekend 2008, and looked forward to attending. Sadly, in August 2008, Anna succumbed to the disease… But the music community would not let her spirit die. They came together in an incredibly moving act of kindness and held the show in her honor. When all was said and done, 17 bands had graced the stage that weekend, as well as numerous local businesses donating prizes, etc., and paid for Anna’s funeral expenses. That spirit of generosity and kindness in our local music community lives on in honor of our lost sister Anna, as a continual way to help others in our area in her name. Please help us every Labor Day weekend as we make a difference in someone’s life and ease the struggle that unfortunate circumstances can bring.
