Meatlocker Recording PARS516

Jim Harpel of the band Meathook and Meatlocker Recording studio joins Bill to discuss both on Episode 516 of the Pennsylvania Rock Show. Segment 1 with Meatlocker Recording Studio How did the studio get its name? Who are some of the bands that we might know that have recorded with you? Can you tell us a bit about your equipment, please? How did you get started in the recording business? If you could be in the studio while any album was being recorded, which one do you wish you got to witness? If you can sit on that proverbial bench for a hour with anyone from music history, who would you sit with and what would you ask them? When you were in high school, did you imagine that you’d be doing this? Can you remember who the first band was that you recorded? Tim Doverspike from Unbroken Soul asked, “Where is the studio located and do you have a website and Facebook page?” Jim tells us about the Butler Boys’ song “The Cap” and Meathook’s song, “Better Off, Over” Segment 2 with Jim Where did the name Meathook come from for the band? How did the band meet? Is there a story that involves the studio? If you were in the movie Rockstar, what band would you end up in? What cartoon character would play you in a cartoon series? What actor would play you in a rockumentary? If you ended up headlining an international tour, what 2 local bands would you take with you to open the shows? On that international tour, what are some the venues that you’d like to play? What is something embarrassing that has happened to you or a bandmate on stage? If there is an apocalyptic event on Earth, which song from Meathook should survive? During your internationally tour, I hang out between shows, what would the traveling soundtrack include? Are there general hours that you try to schedule recording sessions? How can a band get a hold of you to schedule sessions? What is one song that you wish you had written? What is something interesting about you that people would be surprised to know? Have you met any of your musical idols? Is the wood in the drum room a specific type of wood? Was that room selected for drums from the beginning or did you figure out as time went on? What are some of your favorite songs that have been recorded there? Livestreaming from the studio? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFwTbpqYn_o

Shrouded in Neglect PARS431

Nate Kepner of Shrouded in Neglect made is first trip to the Pennsylvania Rock Show tonight, and yes ladies and gentleman, that means this is a metal show! We talked about where the band name came from (this was a new one for me) and how the band formed. We talked about a few other metal bands from the scene both early on and later in the show. We moved on to Nate’s influences which include but are not limited to Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake. (Okay maybe he mentions some metal bands and 90’s alternative bands, too). We then talked a little bit about the local band skell and Rock for Life this past weekend. Nate then tells us about his favorite local bands and we talked about our mutal friend at First Angel Media. He tells us about their song Here Goes the Lights off of their sophmore release Kill All Humans, which we played during the break along with Everything’s Fine by skell. Segment 2: At the beginning of the second segment, Nate talks about searching the Pittsburgh bands to get some great new music. We fan girled it a little and talked about the Penguins and Steelers. Once we got back on track, we talked about Nate’s favorite venues to play at and some of the big name bands (and influencers, is that a word?) that he has played with at the Altar Bar. We also talked about embarrassing situations that have happened to him on Altar Bar’s stage. Which Shrouded In Neglect song would Nate want to represent his band if only one of their songs could survive the apocalypse? Here’s a hint, it comes off of their EP, The Haunting. We find out a little bit about 10 year old Nate and the violin… and a bit more about why he became a musician. What band would he want to open for and at what venue? What does he love about the PGH scene and what does he hate? What would we hear if we listened to Shrouded In Neglect backwards?

Dead Men visit the PA Rock Show

The members of Dead Men from East Stroudsburg, PA join Bill on the show for Episode 396. We began the show by discussing their music style/genres. Rich, Levi, and Kevin give us a bit of an inside look into how the band formed, the band name, and their writing process during the first segment. Dead Men told us about their song Damned, Doomed, & Cursed. Segment 2: We started out learning about Dead Men through asking about the person that supported each of them the most as a musician (we get to learn about Levi’s musical family), what bands and albums are in their music collections, what band would they like to open for and at what venue, what their favorite venue is… we played a short round of “Either or”. We then move onto finding out about their embarrassing stage moments. The band wants you to grab a free copy of the ep at:  https://deadmenband.bandcamp.com/.  We ended things with a few shout outs to www.aproradio.com, www.weeklyrockblog.com, and www.977rocks.com.

Unification – the time is now.. w/ Brian Shaffer

Brian Shaffer of the Weekly RockBlog and the Free Peanuts Band came on the show to discuss the movement to unify the tri-state music scenes. He and Bill discussed how the AK Valley Scene is really family and it really wasn’t a competition. The bands use each other as motivation, but not competition. Brian mentioned how hard it used to be to get into venues in Pittsburgh if you weren’t part of a specific clique or had opened for those bands. He also discussed how the venue owners in our area seem to be more open to giving new bands a chance. Bill brings up that it’s harder to over-saturate this area with shows because we live in a more rural area and the venues are spread out a lot more, whereas, in a city there are multiple venues in one block. We discussed how John Lane, of American Hilljack Files, is trying to create something in the Akron scene that is similar to what we have in the AK Valley. Subscribe: iTunes | Android | Email | Google Play | TuneIn | RSS | More We went off on a tangent about how Bill has helped the scene for a few minutes and got back to our topic at hand by asking Brian for some ideas on how we could unify the music scenes. Brian Shaffer mentioned a site that he, John & and are running called Podcast your Scene. PYS is a network of podcasts that support local music. I took a moment to point out that we had added the Grass Roots Show to our page. The Grass Roots show is a FM radio show that promotes the local scene on 97.7 The Rock Station. It is at this point that Bill goes off on another tangent to talk about a cool event he, John Lane, & John Klazon (and Trudy) attended this past summer called Corbriwoodstock. This was a new experience for Bill, as it was a more laid back rock show. It was awesome. It was at this point that Mr. Shaffer talked about having a yearly show where bands from the 3 different scenes are featured, but each year the state that it is held in rotates. This would allow the scenes to learn about bands from other scenes. He also mentioned a few experience that he had in the past along the same lines. At this point, Brian Shaffer brings up Al Gomes from Big Noise. If you’re looking for more on our ideas about unifying the scenes please check out these 2 articles: https://www.buildthescene.com/please-allow-introduce/ & https://www.buildthescene.com/unite-scenes/ We gave a shout out to our awesome webhosting company Webhost Python for not only being a great webhost, but great people. We spent some time talking about a mutual friend Tony Marinacci and his influence on our scene. You should take a look at Iron City Rock for their yearly awards. We’d like to see Tony get into their hall of fame.
