Lots of music and information for you in this episode. I took a moment to talk about the passing of Cliff from KGB. He was an integral part of our scene and he will be missed. I also did a segment that I titled A Wright of Passage. In this segment I featured songs from Step 11, (kaj), and skell. the link between these songs is that Walter Wright sang lead vocals on all of them. You can hear the progression of his vocals and see how he got to where he is now with what I consider to be the best metal band in the Pittsburgh area. You can read a cd review for their “Everything’s Fine” EP on our other site AK Music Scene. They are currently looking for a drummer to finalize their lineup. Stephen King from Trigger Happy was rearing to go. Guest Co-host John Lane and Bill had to catch up with a late intro. Stephen jumped right into talk about the band’s writing process. The first topic that we covered was song titles. This question came up because of titles like “The Plumber Prevails” and “The Boy Who Lived”.  Stephen was answering Bill and John’s questions before they could even answer them. We talked about his influences. At the beginning of the second part of the interview you get a taste of the conversation that you usually don’t get to hear on the show. Stephen fed off of John pretty well and caused me to leave in some of the “off-air” conversation so that you could understand what was going on haha. You also get to hear us give some props to Utah and Bob of the Grass Roots Show on 97.7 FM. Stephen gives us his take on the Butler Music Scene, as well.

2 degrees of Special Reserve

3/4ths of Special Reserve (Josh, Adam, & Kubi) joined Bill on the show for the first time. In segment 1, they talked about embarrassing moments on stage, the band name, a little bit about their writing process, and their song Charlene. Segment 2 opens with little more in depth look at the band’s writing process, or the lack thereof. They talk about how their writing process is very fluid and they embrace the chaos. We then talked about their individual music collections to give us an idea of what musicians and bands have formed them as musicians. This question took us off onto a tangent about age and how it affects our radio listening habits…. which then turns into the band harassing Josh about his shoes. They talk about their upcoming shows which you can check out on their shows page. We also talked about their favorite venues and more… tune in to hear their answers and the rest of the hijinks….

Chip Dominick

Chip Dominick returns to the Pennsylvania Rock Show. What’s that you don’t know him? Maybe you’d recognize him from his other band’s name, Chip DiMonick. Chip has decided to go out and do the singer/songwriter thing. He isn’t giving up on the heavier genres that he was doing before. He talks about how he wanted the project to be scalable: intimate and stripped down solo act type thing, but he also wanted to be able to do it as a duo, 3 piece or even a full band. Chip will be opening for John Carabi (Former Motley Crue Singer). Also on that bill are the Dirty Charms, Brett Staggs, Doug Carnahan, and Eliza Furnace. This Sunday, March 19th at Cattivo. He talks about a new song called “A Man and His Mama”. In Segment 2, Chip talks about feeling confident that there will be another Chip DiMonick release at some point, but that he has almost 3 albums worth of songs ready as Chip Dominick. He tells us that his writing process is really based on how he is feeling at the time. If he’s in an angry mood, then he’ll end up with a metal song. Some of the topics that were discussed: What was the first local musician’s album that you ever owned? Are there any local bands that are no longer together that you would like to see do a reunion? Kaitlyn, Matt, Paul, and Bob from Divine Betrayal joined Bill to discuss what they have coming up, as well as their band’s past. They mentioned their supporting show for September Mourning with The Art of Burning Bridges. They talked about practicing in Matt’s barn, farm animals and all. They are recording a new EP that is being produced by Grammy Award Winning engineer Eric Emery of Skyharbor. In Segment 2, we get to know the band with the following questions: If I were looking at your music collection, what bands would I see?  Who are you influences? What is an embarrassing moment that you had on stage? What are each of your influences? We then covered bands that they like, but are embarrassed to admit to their friends. George “Yeti” Ivanusic formerly of Isotope, Impugn, and SuperXero comes out of the darkness and talks about his time in the music scene and what he has been up to since leaving SuperXero. For those of you that don’t know the history, SuperXero was the band that existed just before After the Fall. He talked about playing his first show with Sx opening for LA Guns. He talked about being in a band with John Lane, as well as, the SuperXero EP that the band had created with former bandmate Jared Greece when they were called Hybrid. This was more of a catching up with George than an interview. We touched on a ton of local musicians and their interactions with George over the years. He talked about Mike Palone and Keith Kweder of skell. Yeti talked about learning from Mike when Whiskey High was still together. They talk about how George became the guitarist that he is, Nick Catanese, and more. In the third segment George lets it be known that he is looking to join a band, even if it means being a guitar for hire. Heath makes his first appearance on the Pennsylvania Rock Show to talk about his new book, The Band Book. He gives us a glimpse into his how-to book for bands. He talks about everything from e-mail lists, websites, and more. The book touches on everything you can think about including creating your setlists, stage setup, lighting, recording cds, press kits… if you can think of it, it is in there. He also provides many websites and resources for you to go along with his suggestions. Heath offers many, many tips and hints in this episode. Tune in to hear them! About The Band Book Author Heath Kipp has worked in just about every aspect of the music business for over 30 years. He has played in more than 13 bands, performed on 5 studio-recorded CDs, and secured an opening act spot for the jazz great Ramsey Lewis. He’s also worked as an audio engineer for numerous recordings and as a successful booking agent and promoter for a variety of bands. Heath has a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and Media Studies from the University of Pittsburgh with a Minor in Music. His studies were focused in Mass Media, Marketing and Advertising. He also earned an Associate’s Degree in Music Business and Audio/Video Production from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, with major focus on Audio Recording and Live Production, Artist Development, Booking and Promotion. Mike gives us some insight on his former and Whiskey High, current bands skell and Dimwit. He told us about life within the band since the passing of their drummer Keith Kweder and the EP that they plan on releasing at Kwederfest that features Keith on drums called, Everything is Fine. We talked about how After the Fall wrote a song dedicated to Keith and loss, as well as their taking the lead on creating and running Kwederfest to keep Keith in our memories. He also talked about the loss of Terry McCoy from Bled Zeppelin. He gave us some inside information on Pat “Bones” Bono’s haitus from music, and about Pat’s exit from skell and how much of an amazing effort he had put in for the band.   Mike also announces that the original skell drummer, Richie Palone, will be playing for Kwederfest, one time only. Don Shearer of the band Anger the Ant joined Bill to discuss the local scene, his band, and more. He explains where the name Anger the Ant came from. He also talks about the Butler Music Project Volume #1 CD and the process and reasoning behind recording it. He also gave us some incite into what winning the Grassy Award from the Grass Roots Show at 97.7 The Rock Station WLER does for a local band. Bill and Don then discuss how awesome that show and Utah and Bob in particular are for helping the scene out. The Band Jam and the Rock Done Right Tour are just 2 of the many things that these guys do for the scene. Don credits them with helping Anger the Ant get off the ground and become a headliner after playing on the Grass Root Show. Don then tells us about his music collection (or lack thereof), which includes local musicians! To end segment 1, Don and Bill talked about the album, The Story of Her (in 1oo words or less). Don told a story about how the song Easier to Forget came about, as well as, what the story of the album and the song itself are.
