Kristian Montgomery and the Winter Kill Band 3QS056

Kristian Montgomery answers the 3 Questions and a Song gauntlet of questions for episode 56 of 3 Questions and a Song I try not to ask the obvious questions, so this one doesn’t even count towards the 3 questions. Where did the name Winterkill Band come from? If you could sit down with any band listen to them talk about their career and how they got to where they are today, who would you pick and why? What is something that even your most avid fans would be surprised to learn about you? What kind of bands or artists did you discover during the lockdown for the pandemic, what are your top 3 songs that you discovered? asked by Post Profit on episode 55 (The original guest on our pilot episode came up on this question, The Cosmic Vultures!) How did covid and 2020 in general affect you as a band and how much progress have you made in 2021? asked by Post Profit on episode 55. About Kristian Montgomery and the Winter Kill Band Location: Boston, MA, USA Genre: Rock Where to find them: Born in Florida to a Danish immigrant and a blue blooded American girl, his family moved to New England where his father worked as a fisherman. He lived with his grandparents and began singing in the church choir where his voice was recognized by his Reverend, a former professional tenor. Kristian realized the impact his voice had upon people once he opened his eyes after singing the Lord’s Prayer and seeing the silent tears fall from faces he had never met. Outside of church Kristian sang shanties,Celtic and Scandanavian songs at local bars and told stories of fisherman coming home from sea. Over time he progressed as a songwriter and ultimately developed a following, He joined several rock bands through the years where he won awards for his voice. While a member of a metal band, Kristian was nominated for the Boston Music Awards for best male vocalist. He however, did not feel like this genre was a good fit for him. He wanted adventure, so he traveled to Nicaragua to perform on television in Managua. While there, he was photographed sitting around a table relaxing in the capital with an AK-47 in his arms; as if this was war torn country was just another place to find stories for his songs. This experience awoke something in Kristian, he found a freedom that only his ancestors had known. He began taking his music back to his father’s homeland, where it was received like a son coming home to his family. Although his intentions were to bring music to the world; after starting a family in the US, it was at the dinner table where he truly found home. A divorce inevitably threw Kristian back into performing. He was jailed after fighting for equal rights for fathers in Massachusetts. Having lost everything, he began to rebuild his life. Upon release from prison he began work on “The Gravel Church”. He wrote about his experiences in prison, starting over and how he found hope. “When your world is taken away” he says “it’s like watching a ship sail further and further away from you. You’re far apart, but if you put your feet in the water you’re still connected” About the song, It’s a song about a dream I had about a woman making me dig my own grave in Vegas and every time she shot me said it’s ok baby.

Post Profit 3QS055

On Episode 55 of 3 Questions and a Song, Post Profit join Bill to discuss their new single “Better Off” and to take their turn at 3 questions! If you were standing at a crossroads waiting for the Devil to show up so that you could sell your soul, what musical wish would you be asking for? You’ve played with some big name bands such as: FILTER, SALIVA, DROWNING POOL, TO WHOM IT MAY, AND SONS OF TEXAS, but the real question is… who is your Dave Grohl? Where did your band name come from? asked by Tom Tikka of the Impersonators on episode 54 Bonus Question: If you could go back in time without breaking the space-time continuum and follow any band around for a year, who would you follow around to learn from or just plain hangout with? About the Song, Better Off “Better Off” touches on a lot of sensitive aspects of the state of humanity currently and throughout history. The track presents the idea that hate is deeply intertwined in our current culture, and that hate is being propelled by the media, politics, and institutional racism. The track poses the question “What if we could learn to love?”, hinting that it will take a collective effort for people to learn about one another’s cultures and learn to respect their difference. If we all love and respect our fellow man to some degree, the human race as a whole will be “Better Off”. Humanity could progress leaps and bounds if different people and different nations across the globe could band together and form a sort of global standard of respect, peace, and love for one another. Tom Tikka, The Impersonators 3QS054

Tommi Tikka, of the Impersonators, takes his second turn at 3 Questions and a Song I recently watched a documentary on Robert Johnson, which brings me to ask you… if you were standing at a crossroads and the Devil offers you whatever you want in return for your soul, what would you do? You mentioned that your album, Life of Grant, is a concept album, can you tell us about the concept? Have you ever thought considered writing jingles for songs for the opening of tv shows? asked by Cultt of She on episode 53. About the Song, Scarlett Hell This is a very difficult song to get into for me. It’s obvious to anyone reading the lyrics that “Scarlet Hell” is about prostitution, or more specifically the dark side of prostitution that can include human trafficking, sexual slavery, drugs and occasionally…even murder. As the music video depicts, sometimes people who buy sex from the wrong prostitute, end up in a cardboard box. In case it doesn’t become clear that this song is anti-prostitution for all the aforementioned reasons, then I’ll make point about saying it clearly: this is an anti-prostitution song. Musically, “Scarlet Hell” is one of my favorite Impersonators tracks. Our producer Janne Saksa and I worked very hard on the arrangement. I like the Latin, Santana-feel the song has and also the solo, which was played completely off the cuff, is one of my better ones, I think. Recorded roughly a year and a half ago, this was the time I was seriously getting into wah wah, which has now become a bit of a trademark for me. Another favorite moment on the song is the outro with its vocal harmonies and adlibbed lead vocals. I was listening to “Scarlet Hell” in the kitchen this morning, when my six-year-old son walked in, asking for cereal. “Is this you singing, Daddy?” he asked. “It is,” I told him proudly. “It’s not very good,” my son exlaimed. I didn’t know how to respond to his comment. He caught me completely by surprise. He noticed this and was for a moment scared that he had hurt my feelings. Hence, he continued, “But I like it much better than the music you had on before. What was that?” “That was The Eagles,” I said with a smile. “It’s a legendary group, Darling,” I kept talking. “Are they as legendary as KSI?” he asked. Knowing KSI is his big brothers’ favorite YouTuber, I stroke his hair and said, “Probably not.” One day, he’ll find out. About the Impersonators Location: Finland Genre: Indie Rock Where to find them: Time flies! And yet I can remember it all like yesterday. I was on my couch in Helsinki, looking out the window, down in the dumps, freshly divorced and also recovering from the break-up of Carmen Gray, a band whose entire catalog I had written with my brother Lappe Holopainen. Gone was the support of Sony/BMG and Warner. I was flat on my ass and clueless. I thought about hanging up my six-string. Maybe it was time. A tear rolled down my cheek. Just then my phone beeped. It was a text from a friend of mine, one Antti Autio. The text was a poem titled “Ghost Town Radio”. It was absolutely brilliant. I ran to my bedroom, got my acoustic guitar and wrote a melody to Antti’s lines. It was like lightning had struck. Before this moment, Antti was a guy I had met at the university, a chap I was swapping records with (he too was a music fanatic). But with that text and that song, we became blood brothers of sorts, songwriter buddies, soul mates and two halves of a duo called The Impersonators. And now finally, after many turns on this winding road called life, we are releasing our first full-length album titled Life Of Grant. Oddly enough, the song that began it all isn’t on this album. You’ll have to wait for that one for a bit. Be that as it may, I hope you enjoy these eleven courses that our secret weapon, producer Janne Saksa has prepared for you. Bon appétit!
