Para Bellum PARS548

Terry Blair of Para Bellum joins Bill to discuss his band Para Bellum, their single “I Die Alone”, and upcoming tracks; among other topics. Featuring music from: Royal Honey, Stone Cold Killer, Black Ridge, Para Bellum, The Redlines, Dying Breed, 13 Saints, Half Wheel, & Murder for Girls Segment 1 with Para Bellum Para Bellum means “for war” in Latin and also refers to a firearm cartridge. I know from past conversations with you that every member of the band has a military background, how does that play into the story of the formation of the band? I know that you’re headed to the studio at Rattle Clack Entertainment next week, and earlier today, I got a little behind the scenes listen to some of the things that you’ll be recording, can you talk a little bit about how you decide what songs to cover and the theme behind your originals. What is your writing process like? You’ve been on my shows enough to know the drill, tell me something about the song, I Die Alone. Segment 2 with Terry During the pandemic, this might be the hardest question I ask, but what does the future hold for Para Bellum? Can you tell me about the point in the time that you wanted to be a musician? Who is your Dave Grohl? Who would you put in a band that you were going to manage? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xSo53sGN-E

American Jive – Royal Honey 3QS039

3 Questions for Bobby C & Eric of Royal Honey You guys recently got to play a few shows (pandemic effected their schedule), how did that feel? If they were to make a Rockumentary about Royal Honey, who would play each of you in the film? Ofilia, of the Band Areshenic from Episode 38, would like to know why are there no females in your band? About the Song, American Jive: American Jive was one of Royal Honey’s first original tunes and has been in their live set since the start of the band. It was written by Dave Musick and recorded by Jazz Byers for the Rattle Clack Compilation 2020. It was also included as a bonus track on Royal Honey’s first CD “Hype, Money And Misbehavior” which is available from their website, Bandcamp, and all major streaming outlets. In a year full of turmoil and disease, American Jive somewhat prophetically asks the audience “Are you glad to be alive?” About the Royal Honey: Where to find them: Location: Pittsburgh, PA, USA Genre: Swagg-n-Roll People ask all the time where the name Royal Honey comes from? Drummer Angelo Amantea says with his swaggitude “I just made it up…It’s what I do! I’ve been naming bands for years!” That’s not all they’ve been doing for years. Royal Honey brings together some of the best talent and experience in the rust belt region. The band has only been together since 2018, but its members go way back in the local steel city scene, having played renowned clubs like The Decade, Graffiti, The Electric Banana, 31st Street Pub, and Someplace Else regularly. They’ve also all played up and down the major east coast cities, prior to forming Royal Honey. These guys have been around the block a bunch of times. Coming from previous bands including The Dirty Charms, The Ultimatics, The Cheats, The Addicts, Lize, The Science Fiction Idols, The Cosmosonics, Child of Fire, Kill Bossa, Rainstation Zero and Gas Tiger, they’ve got the experience and pedigree to write great catchy songs and put on killer energetic shows! Guitarist Eric Rodger says “We’ve accomplished so much in just a short year and half, because we’re all contributing and pulling the same direction. Dave brings most of the song ideas, and we lay down the tracks with efficiency in the studio. Ang does almost all the artwork and flyers and books most of the shows. Greg’s in radio, so he’s our PR man, getting us press and interviews. I handle the studio mixing and merch, and making sure that everything we produce is top grade. And Bobby commands every crowd we play to like the master of ceremonies that he is! Because of this camaraderie, Royal Honey has released one CD and is already mixing the next one, just signed a recording contract with The Vault Records, and has played to hundreds of fans in major cities like NYC, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh.” Royal Honey’s sound has been described as part New York Dolls, part Guns N Roses. Their influences are abound, including The Stones, AC/DC, NY Dolls, Guns N Roses, Kix, The Cult and Faster Pussycat, with some Thin Lizzy guitars thrown in for good measure. And topped off with steel city grit and attitude.

Review: Corbriwoodstock & A Concert for Anna – 10 years!

On September 3, 2017, I left my house with the intention of hanging out with John “The American Hilljack” Lane & Johnny “The Real John” Lane at Corbriwoodstock. This was mine and the Hilljack’s second visit to Cobriwoodstock in as many years. The show is in its tenth year! It is an amazing show with such a great back drop and line up. This isn’t my normal haunt. The show features more of a bluesy vibe. It is a relaxing and welcoming venue which features a backyard stage, flowers from Mt. Vernon, vendors, a great host (John Vento), and 97.7 FM’s Rock Done Right Tour. We arrived slightly later due to a picnic and a flat tire on the way there, but once we were there we were in heaven. We witnessed sets by Samantha Sears, The Compradres, Folkhammer, The B-men, Tina Daniels & Company, & The Nied’s Hotel Band. The show is a benefit for Allegheny CleanWays. Allegheny CleanWays is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed in 2000 to “engage and empower people to eliminate illegal dumping and littering in Allegheny County.” We left Cobriwoodstock at about 9pm and headed to the Quality Inn Tarentum to catch the last 3 sets of the night of the third day of A Concert for Anna, also celebrating its tenth year. In April 2008, Anna Lee Piroch was diagnosed with cervical cancer. The original Concert For Anna was put together by the local music community, of which Anna was an avid fan, as a way to help her pay her bills while she was unable to work as she battled the disease. Anna knew of the show to be held for her over Labor Day weekend 2008, and looked forward to attending. Sadly, in August 2008, Anna succumbed to the disease… But the music community would not let her spirit die. They came together in an incredibly moving act of kindness and held the show in her honor. When all was said and done, 17 bands had graced the stage that weekend, as well as numerous local businesses donating prizes, etc., and paid for Anna’s funeral expenses. That spirit of generosity and kindness in our local music community lives on in honor of our lost sister Anna, as a continual way to help others in our area in her name. Please help us every Labor Day weekend as we make a difference in someone’s life and ease the struggle that unfortunate circumstances can bring. We caught a partial set from Here and Now, After the Fall, & Creep. My cellphone had died and I left my camera in the car, so no pictures from this show. Here and Now is a great acoustic rock cover band featuring veteran scene musicians. After the Fall was up next, they are one of the top bands in our scene and didn’t disappoint. They played a few covers but hit us hard with their originals. Last on the bill was Creep. A band that I had never seen live and had been at the top of my wishlist. They were everything I had hoped for and more. They also had some surprises up their sleeves with a visit from Mark Lux, an announcement that they had sold out of their EP Lesson 3, and they let slip that they’re going to start working on a new album! If you want to get a digital copy of Lesson 3, you can do so by listening to Episode 325 of the Pennsylvania Rock Show. Both events are worth your donation to their causes and provide great lineups of music. As the time of this article, you have 364 days to get your ticket for next year! Don’t miss the 11th installment of both events! It takes a little time management, but you can definitely hit both shows on Sunday as we did. Keep in mind that A Concert for Anna is a 3 day event!

Fist Fight in the Parking Lot

Come join Molasses Barge and Fist Fight in the Parking Lot as they release their next CDs with blackseed records. Both bands will be featuring songs live from their records and have CDs available for sale, and they want to share it with YOU, Pittsburgh! July 28, 2017 Doors at 9, Show at 10PM $5 In our first segment, Bill is visited by Moe, Larry, and Curly… errr Jason, Johnny Metal, and RuDawg of Fist Fight in the Parking Lot. We start out talking about the writing process and how circumstances allowed them to sit on the songs and go back to them later, we smoothly transitioned into the history of the band (yeah smoothly haha) and talking about about festivals and competitions… throughout the whole interview you get bits and pieces about their writing  & recording processes. I asked about the title of the album, and got a lot of different answers (haha). They were much more forthcoming about where the band name came from. Segment 2 starts out with a conversation about social media and websites and then we move on to learning a bit more about the pieces that make up FFITPL. Sammy or Dave? It was around this time that we learned that Chris embarrasses Fist Fight in the Parking Lot. We move on to name every band we could think of and even talk about Overlord Brom (Dethlehem) and his helmet. Somehow we even included Orko… we then move onto having them create their own super group from local musicians. and well… ya… listen to the episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KecIdlEAKhU Bob Price was the member of Dog Day Sunrise that I couldn’t remember during the show, tattoos at Inferno Studios.

Pay to Play, Record Labels, Promoters and more PYS001

Bill, Brian, & John start to bring out their opinions on pay to play. John and Brian both fall into the group of musicians that are against them. The conversation covers topics of pay to play, benefit shows, promoting a show and who is responsible, record labels and hidden issues, music reality tv and the reality of it, music competitions, and more. Is there a right way to do pay to play? Is it killing music scenes and venues? How does it affect younger bands vs veteran bands? Brian talks about the Zippo Hot Tour and how much he loved how that was ran. Bill told road stories and Brian and John want to take him on a tour to manage it for them. Eric Anthony, formerly of (kaj), and currently soundman came up in during the show. Everyone is in agreement that he does an amazing job on the board … and eventually we get around to Rock for Life, that series is just amazing in all of our eyes.   Have the Stone Temple Pilots Found their New Frontman?
