The Real John Lane?

John “The American Hilljack” Lane, front man and lead vocals of the Hellfire Club & John Alfred Lane IV join Bill in the Episode of “Will the Real John Lane Please Stand Up… please stand up… In this episode we learn about John Lane and his doppleganger from another Earth… errr son, Johnny and their musical journey. We learn about Johnny and his band Three Vultures. Bill asks him some of his staple questions (you also get to hear Bill sing part of The Three Little Pigs). The Real John Lane talks about his favorite venues, pay to play, embarrassing stage moments, learning guitar and the drums, and shoots on the scene a bit, too. Bill puts John on the spot and has him do an impromptu concert calendar for the show. He also tells us a story about lasagna… yes lasagna. Who are the Three Vultures? Three Vultures is the brain child of Dustin Cutright. For as long as he can remember, he has wanted to be a musician, one that changed the way people felt and listened to music, and one that also opened the minds of his listeners. With a few years and a few bands under his belt, Three Vultures is his most experimental project. With the passion and talent of John Lane on the drums and the groove-filled, dark bass riffs of Auston Dunnington, 3V is an experienced trio of musicians putting hard work, dedication, and love of all genres into their music. Taking influences from grunge, alternative, progressive, psychedelic, and stoner/desert rock for their music and life experiences for their lyrics, Three Vultures is a well rounded rock band. Rock band based out the Pittsburgh, PA area. We got our start in late 2014 when singer/song writer/ rhythm guitarist Dave Hipchen started working on original songs with Gregg Shotts on drums, Clayton Hoover on bass and Jeffrey Stouffer on lead guitar. The result was the July 2015 release of our debut album “Nothing Ventured.” Described by our fans as melodic rock with a hint of grunge, the album draws on a wide array of our influences from classic rock to grungey 90’s stuff to metal, and whatever else in between. In August of 2016, Joey Conner replaced Jeffrey on lead guitar.

13 Saints

13 Saints join Bill for episode 378 of the Pennsylvania Rock Show. In segment 1, We talked about their beginnings and past bands, we talked about the shows that they’ve played in just over a year of existence. We also talked about the song Evel Kniviel Segment 2 started off with the band discussing their influences and we moved into talking about their biggest supporters or lack thereof. From there we moved on to discussing stories from the stage. We then transferred into talking a bit about the music scene itself including venues, pay to play, and more. At the end of the segment they tell us about the song Genius. We featured that song and Angry Itch’s song Heroes of Hate. Segment 3 opens with Bill asking Creep, Ernie, and Dave to tell him a bit more about the band that maybe nobody knows. They then talked about getting ready to record their second album and the recording process that they use. Bill asked them about the studio that they used to record Throwing Copper in Sharpsburg called Very Tight Recordings…. and more…. Who are 13 Saints? Facebook Official Website The music is a cross between crunching hard rock and melodicism, with guitar-driven songs that are hooky yet hard-edged. They combine strong melodies with loud power chords, incorporating rock and roll and punk elements but with alternative rock sensibilities. With jangly guitars and the pace and riffs of punk rock, arrangements are economical and performances are energetic. Songs come hard and fast and won’t wait for you to catch up. The songs are tight. The band is tight. Think the friendly hooks of a pop melody mixed with Marshall stacks and a relentless four-on-the-floor beat. It’s fast, loud, and unapologetic. Some would even say it’s a little undignified. Kismet? Destiny? Luck? All of the above! Four guys from different worlds – Philadelphia, Clarion, Burgettstown, and Long Island – met by happenstance in 2016 and form 13 Saints in Pittsburgh PA. These four been-there-done-that rock and roll veterans offer straightforward, cranked-up original rock and roll songs. No gimmicks. No whining. Not frilly, fancy, or complicated. Whether on a big stage or in your favorite dive bar, these guys are individually and collectively committed to giving the audience a memorable show. But they don’t take it all too seriously. They’re having fun. And so will you. If rock and roll is part of your DNA, then put 13 Saints on your must-see list. The debut album of 13 Saints, Crushing Copper, is available NOW and features11 tracks of gritty, passionate music. Crushing Copper is available for download from iTunes, and you can listen online at Spotify and our website (http://www.13saintsrock.com/music.html). You can also buy a CD at any show. More information including show dates can be found on our website: www.13saintsrock.com Booking and other contacts: 13saintsrock@gmail.com KNOW YOUR SAINTS! DAVE BUZARD. Upscale white trash guitar junkie and music addict. Grew up with just enough dysfunction to make him fun to hang with. Been playing so long that he really should be better at it! Owns some really cool hats because he owns some really shitty hair. CREEP NEWHOLLAND. Bassist, singer, and anger management counseling drop-out. British-rock-a-holic with a penchant for all things pre-1974. Having performed from New York to DC and everywhere in between, he is happy to now call Pittsburgh his home. ERIC CORBIN. He won’t give you the shirt off his back, not because he’s selfish but because he rarely wears one when playing the drums. Living by the motto “Variety is the shot of life, chased by moderation” Eric’s done it all – 70s KISS, 80s metal, 90s alternative, 00s garage rock, today’s whatever it is…and everything in between. ERNIE DIRT. Debonair ax slinger from a riffier time and a grittier place. If you aren’t willing to drive six hours on a school night to see your favorite bar band and then catch a half hour of shuteye at a truck stop before work, you can’t hang with Ernie Dirt.

A Wright of Passage

Lots of music and information for you in this episode. I took a moment to talk about the passing of Cliff from KGB. He was an integral part of our scene and he will be missed. I also did a segment that I titled A Wright of Passage. In this segment I featured songs from Step 11, (kaj), and skell. the link between these songs is that Walter Wright sang lead vocals on all of them. You can hear the progression of his vocals and see how he got to where he is now with what I consider to be the best metal band in the Pittsburgh area. You can read a cd review for their “Everything’s Fine” EP on our other site AK Music Scene. They are currently looking for a drummer to finalize their lineup. You can e-mail Mikey Palone if you think you have what it takes. We featured tracks from: Sofachrome, Tony Marinacci, Camp Element, Silk 9, Homicide Black, Step 11, (kaj), skell, KGB, Dethlehem, Divine Tragedy We featured the following upcoming concerts: May 13: Rock for Life: Spring Fling – Leechburg Moose – $5 Members/$10 Qualified Guests Big house Pete MonaLisa Smile a common crown Heidi & The Hellcats June 10: Feel the Fire Fest 5 – $20 preshow/$25 at the gates – 1314 Hebron Rd SE, Heath, OH 43056-1040 Saliva Xfactor1 Scars like Mine Waragon one in the Chamber After the fall Managed Chaos Iron Head Inc Corrosive Vengence Ribcage Infidel July 7 & 8: Gigaroo 2017 – $20 – Iselin Ballfield Friday July 7 Homicide Black Zone 8 East End Kill the Drama Shattered a commmon crown JL Cook Acoustic Saturday July 8 After the Fall Silk 9 The Hellfire Club Flashback Mojo Filter Here and Now Transcendence Post Traumatik OverMyDeadBody Trigger Happy SuffaCate

Skell ~ “Everything’s Fine” – AKMusicScene.com

The long awaited Skell CD was released this year and there will be very few fans who can’t agree that it is worth the wait! This is an amazing compilation of the current members; Mike Palone (guitar), Mike Ekis (bass), Wally Wright (vocals) and using tracks recorded by late drummer, Kieth Kweder. As Skell is still searching for the right drummer for their band it seemed only right that they use Keith’s already recorded tracks in tribute to him. Not by chance, the release happened at KwederFest, a yearly benefit event that has been going since Keith’s untimely death. Skell is a well known Hard Rock/Metal band from the Pittsburgh area that has been going strong for ten years, and “Everything’s Fine” is a CD that will prove just why they are so popular. The production quality is amazing and the band made special effort to thank Rob Deaner (Contagious Music) as well as Sean McDonald (Red Medicine Recording) for their talent. The five track release Contains: Track #1 – Deaf Ears Track #2 – Loose Myself Track #3 – Everything’s Fine? Track #4 – Menschheit Track #5 – Everything’s Fine? (Radio Edit) On a personal note, when I popped this into my CD player at the beginning of a long ride I didn’t expect to let it play for almost an hour but I was caught up in it from the first notes. While all genres have their own sound Skell keeps their originality in the front from start to finish. Their influences of Sabbath, Slipknot, Slayer, and some added influence of Deep Purple can be found as trace elements in the songs but their own sound retains its identity. There is obviously a ton of talent in this band and the production quality brings it to you in a way that makes you feel like they are in front of you on stage. I was so excited by what I heard that I hoped from the first play through that I would get to do this review. What you’ll find from the very beginning are drum beats that make something in you move, that top body nod you get at concerts because the feeling has hit you and you have no choice but to give in to it. The wonderfully rough-edged vocals grab you and rather than bleeding into the music they force you to listen and catch every word. The laughter in “Deaf Ears” is perfectly maniacal and growling at the same time. An accent to the music and song that fits perfectly. From “Loose Myself,” I can almost promise you will be screaming “If I lost myself, do you think you could find me” right along with it. These two songs are hard hitting and energetic with real meaning behind the words. The title track “Everything’s Fine” slows things down a bit. Certainly not a ballad but filled with moments, such as the guitar solo, where you close your eyes and let it all flow through you. While retaining the hard rock feel it brings you to a place inside that’s almost soothing at times. It never gets too slow and “Menschheit” brings you immediately to a fever pitch that continues through the song before setting you back into the radio edit of the title track. In all, this is a wonderful CD and shows the amazing talent of this band. Crisp clean sound with everything hard rock and metal are supposed to be but carving its own path with its originality and feel. By the release of this review Skell’s “Everything’s Fine” will be available to the public online at iTines, Amazon, Best Buy, Target as well as streaming on Pandora, Spotify, Deezer and even more to come. There’s also the option of seeing one of their shows, which you can find listed on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/skellmetal or their website and purchase one directly from the band. That may be the best option because if this is what Skell sounds like in a studio, I can only imagine what it would be to see them live!
