The Art of Being a Front Man PYS003

Doug Carnahan of After the Fall comes on episode #3 of Podcast your Scene: Throwdown to join Bill, Brian, and John and discuss what it is like to be a front man. Bill asked the boys the following questions: Are the monitors really always as bad as you guys think they are on stage? How would you have handled the situation that Mariah Carey was in on New Year’s Eve? When did you know you wanted to sing in a rock band, and why? In each of your eyes, what do you believe it takes to be the front man of a rock band? Have you ever made a decision to do a stunt on stage that you realize that maybe you shouldn’t have done that and lost your place in the song? Do you have any embarrassing stories from you time in bands? What is your favorite part about being in the spotlight and being the front man of your band? If there was one thing that you wanted your fans to know, what would it be? The guys told some very interesting road stories, as well as, information from each of their respective backgrounds. At one point, they talk about finding the correct woman that understands what you have to be as a front man to be able to keep your personal and band relationships in check. The guys also talked little bit about their respective scenes. We also did a little bit of a biography of Tony Marinacci which will lead us into next month’s episode of Podcast Your Scene: Throwdown, where we will be talking about the state of local entertainment. This was an annual thing that Tony wrote for his website. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUxdtXrCJ6U Give us some Feedback: Subscribe, Review, & Rate us on iTunes Subscribe, Review, & Rate us on MixCloud Subscribe, Review, & Rates us on Google Play E-mail: feedback@buildthescene.com Call Us: 724-568-7018 Join Our Mailing List

Hustle, Grifters, Pickers, and Bluegrass

Patrick Varine of Charlie Hustle and the Grifters, Charlie Hustle and the Pickers, and Covered in Grass joined Bill for episode 363 of the Pennsylvania Rock Show. Pat gave us an explanation of the bands’ names and how the band was formed. He gave us some insight into how the writing process works for the band. Patrick, explains the background of the band and what each member brings to the melting pot that is the band. One of the songs that they play is Riders on the Storm, which immediately brings to Bill’s mind The Blues Brothers 2000. He points out that he felt that Charlie Hustle and the Grifters could have starred in that movie. It was at this point that the band Covered in Grass comes into the conversation. Pat seems to be a student of both music and the internet, you’ll have to listen to understand why we believe this. Subscribe: iTunes | MixCloud | Android | Email | Google Play | TuneIn | RSS | More He talks about how a lot of Pat’s original songs have New Orleans references in them, he also mentions that they usually have something to do with relationships. Sometimes the songs come from a lyric book that he keeps. Pat mentions that the Calliope Songwriters Circle was very helpful in his progression as a song writer. They meet at the Bloomfield Tavern in Bloomfield. Unification – the time is now.. w/ Brian Shaffer

Brian Shaffer of the Weekly RockBlog and the Free Peanuts Band came on the show to discuss the movement to unify the tri-state music scenes. He and Bill discussed how the AK Valley Scene is really family and it really wasn’t a competition. The bands use each other as motivation, but not competition. Brian mentioned how hard it used to be to get into venues in Pittsburgh if you weren’t part of a specific clique or had opened for those bands. He also discussed how the venue owners in our area seem to be more open to giving new bands a chance. Bill brings up that it’s harder to over-saturate this area with shows because we live in a more rural area and the venues are spread out a lot more, whereas, in a city there are multiple venues in one block. We discussed how John Lane, of American Hilljack Files, is trying to create something in the Akron scene that is similar to what we have in the AK Valley. Subscribe: iTunes | Android | Email | Google Play | TuneIn | RSS | More We went off on a tangent about how Bill has helped the scene for a few minutes and got back to our topic at hand by asking Brian for some ideas on how we could unify the music scenes. Brian Shaffer mentioned a site that he, John & and are running called Podcast your Scene. PYS is a network of podcasts that support local music. I took a moment to point out that we had added the Grass Roots Show to our page. The Grass Roots show is a FM radio show that promotes the local scene on 97.7 The Rock Station. It is at this point that Bill goes off on another tangent to talk about a cool event he, John Lane, & John Klazon (and Trudy) attended this past summer called Corbriwoodstock. This was a new experience for Bill, as it was a more laid back rock show. It was awesome. It was at this point that Mr. Shaffer talked about having a yearly show where bands from the 3 different scenes are featured, but each year the state that it is held in rotates. This would allow the scenes to learn about bands from other scenes. He also mentioned a few experience that he had in the past along the same lines. At this point, Brian Shaffer brings up Al Gomes from Big Noise. If you’re looking for more on our ideas about unifying the scenes please check out these 2 articles: https://www.buildthescene.com/please-allow-introduce/ & https://www.buildthescene.com/unite-scenes/ We gave a shout out to our awesome webhosting company Webhost Python for not only being a great webhost, but great people. We spent some time talking about a mutual friend Tony Marinacci and his influence on our scene. You should take a look at Iron City Rock for their yearly awards. We’d like to see Tony get into their hall of fame. A Shotts in the Dar… Shadows.. Tilted Shadows

Commiserating with our esteemed host (OK, it’s just Bill) this week is Gregg Shotts of Tilted Shadows and Post Traumatik. He told us that Tilted Shadows has 4 songs written and are hoping to be recording soon. This brings up their writing process. Gregg told us that sometimes David brings the song to everyone, other times Dave shows up at his place and they work on some of it and then take it to the rest of the band. He also mentioned that Joey sometimes brings new ideas/songs to the band. We then talked about trying to unite the tri-state music scenes and his ideas on what could help make that come to a fruition. We talked about how older talent can help the younger talent and really bring recognition to their bands just through networking. It could also help bands get booked in venues that they normally wouldn’t get added to. We talked about the different bands he has played in since coming to Pennsylvania. He loves playing 90’s style rocking songs, nothing too heavy. He likes the local heavy bands, but doesn’t think he has the stamina to play that style. One interesting story that he brings up has to do with Chelsea, Post Traumatik’s singer, seeing Tilted Shadows play for the first time… but you need to listen to hear why… Get your copy of Tilted Shadow’s Album, Nothing Ventured on CD Baby. Pay to Play, Record Labels, Promoters and more PYS001

Bill, Brian, & John start to bring out their opinions on pay to play. John and Brian both fall into the group of musicians that are against them. The conversation covers topics of pay to play, benefit shows, promoting a show and who is responsible, record labels and hidden issues, music reality tv and the reality of it, music competitions, and more. Is there a right way to do pay to play? Is it killing music scenes and venues? How does it affect younger bands vs veteran bands? Brian talks about the Zippo Hot Tour and how much he loved how that was ran. Bill told road stories and Brian and John want to take him on a tour to manage it for them. Eric Anthony, formerly of (kaj), and currently soundman came up in during the show. Everyone is in agreement that he does an amazing job on the board … and eventually we get around to Rock for Life, that series is just amazing in all of our eyes.   Have the Stone Temple Pilots Found their New Frontman? Pantera, Alice in Chains, & Skynyrd…oh MY

On this episode of the Pennsylvania Rock Show, Jake Parks from Terachain Sky joins us for the first time. We discussed their band name PanTERA-alice in CHAINs-lynyrd SKYnyrd. I spent some time letting him know just how awesome they are live. They played the Pennsylvania Rock Show 12 last month. That was the first time that I saw them live. It WON’T be the last. We spent some time learning about the band and how they have learned what it takes to keep people at the show. Their goal… to blow you away. We talked about their recording process and learned that they are currently working on a 3rd disc that they hope to release it in February of 2017. We also discussed Utah and the Grassroots Show. I also brought up the question that we discussed on the 2nd episode of the Podcast your Scene podcast, what are you feelings on pay to play. Along those lines, I got him to drop some names of some touring bands that they have opened for: Apocalypse Blues Revue & Charm City Devils. At the end of this podcast, John “The American Hilljack” Lane joined us in the call and you can hear that over at his website on Episode 9 of The American Hilljack Files. I try to never split my podcast episodes into 2 episodes, but this one just couldn’t be helped. John took over and shined so it gets to be part of his show. Coincidentally, it is my debut on the American Hilljack files.
