Ruben Alan David & Muskie of Folk You met Bill at the Leechburg Moose 102 (thanks!) to do an interview on this episode, and afterwards they recorded one of their Guerilla Folk Videos on the Leechburg Walking Bridge. What they talked about during the first segment of the show: The origin of the band name. How they decide where to record a Guerilla Folk Video, and how many times they have done it. Describe your costumes (and back story). Ruben tells us about the song, Folk You, which the performed live for the show as well. Topics covered in segment 2: We discuss the bands that Muskie and Ruben Alan David have been in/are in. Ruben does an amazing job talking about Rock for Life. Folk You gets to tell us what they love about the scene and what they would like to change. They tell us something that their fans would be surprised to know about them. Ruben then surprised Bill, but actually having an embarrassing moment on stage to talk about. Muskie and Ruben tell us about their favorite bands from the scene, and their love for the original music in our area. What happens when you play Folk You backwards? We did something unusual this week, well actually 2 very unusual things. We had a guest on from a cover band. WHAT!?! As you all know the Pennsylvania Rock Show is about original music. That doesn’t mean that we’re against cover bands, we just can’t play covers on the show. We are also playing 5, yes 5 brand new songs to the show in this episode! Shannon of 2KD joined us to talk about their second annual #SYDSTRONG toy drive. The toy drive is in honor of a past Rock for Life Recipient who has unfortunately, passed. Its their way to keep Syd’s name and soul alive. The show features 7 bands and is Saturday, December 23, 2017. There is a $5 cover (which will be donated to a current RfL Recipient) or you can bring a new unwrapped toy. They toys will be taken to Childrens Hospital and donated to the children there on December 24th. Toys can also be dropped off in advance of the show if you can’t make it at the Sidebar, Polish Falcons, K&S Automotive, Kittanning Collision, and the Pizzeria. Bill was a bit all over the place so many topics were covered during this show, including talking about some other local band members that pop in to support local music at other bands’ shows. We talked about Lady Jaye of First Angel Media and her multi talents of both writing and photography. In segment 1: Erik Rhodes, from Shattered, joined to discuss many things in the world of Shattered including their up and coming Album, Blackout Sessions. We discussed the band the Art of Burning Bridges and a former band of some of the members, Fountain Infinity. We debut the song Love/Hate/Obsession on the show. We talk a bit about the song and how it is a “Shattered” version of a love song.  We talked about a show 10 and a half years ago 2/23/2007 when Shattered played live in my living room. We have 2 live tracks from that night in our archives. Erik talked about the recording process that they used for the Blackout Session album. He told us that they had already started writing this album before the last album, Rise of Hypocrisy was released, and that they had started recording the album in October 2014. He told us about some upcoming shows that the band and his acoustic project have coming up. Shattered is opening tomorrow, September 30, 2017 for Lacuna Coil at Diesel. Erik gave us some incite into his influences through telling us about his music collection. In segment 2: Erik told us about the acoustic track, Silhouette, off of the upcoming release, too. We talked a bit about country music!?!?!? We moved on to get Erik’s opinion on pay to play. We talked about what is good about our music scene and even something that Erik believes needs fixed about the scene. We talked about the quality of the musicians in the scene and the Rock for Life Concert Series, as well. I brought up the band Creep, who will be writing new music for the first time in years, you can get a digital copy of their last album by listening for a code in Episode 325 of the Pennsylvania Rock Show. We then discussed the different influences that may have affected the sound of the Blackout Sessions album. I then had Erik tell us his favorite song off of the new disc, his overall favorite Shattered Song, & his favorite cover to play. Erik brought up the band Deadman’s Hand that I’m trying to book, now.

Johnny Walyko and Pete Peters from Project 52 joined Bill on the show for the first time to discuss what Project 52 (songs) is and how Pete hooked up with Johnny. We talked about the complications of recording a song weekly. They talk about the bassist Daniel who they use on the tracks as well. Johnny actually met Daniel for the first time when they played a show together a few weeks ago. We talked about how to incorporate Johnny’s girlfriend into the recording process.  We talked about their military backgrounds. In segment two we talked about their newest song “Stuck” and what it is about and how they recorded it. We talked a little bit about their style and recording process as well as where people can download the 52 songs that they are creating. The songs have been recorded at the Light House Project and the University of Pittsburgh.

On September 3, 2017, I left my house with the intention of hanging out with John “The American Hilljack” Lane & Johnny “The Real John” Lane at Corbriwoodstock. This was mine and the Hilljack’s second visit to Cobriwoodstock in as many years. The show is in its tenth year! It is an amazing show with such a great back drop and line up. This isn’t my normal haunt. The show features more of a bluesy vibe. It is a relaxing and welcoming venue which features a backyard stage, flowers from Mt. Vernon, vendors, a great host (John Vento), and 97.7 FM’s Rock Done Right Tour. We arrived slightly later due to a picnic and a flat tire on the way there, but once we were there we were in heaven. We witnessed sets by Samantha Sears, The Compradres, Folkhammer, The B-men, Tina Daniels & Company, & The Nied’s Hotel Band. The show is a benefit for Allegheny CleanWays. Allegheny CleanWays is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed in 2000 to “engage and empower people to eliminate illegal dumping and littering in Allegheny County.” We left Cobriwoodstock at about 9pm and headed to the Quality Inn Tarentum to catch the last 3 sets of the night of the third day of A Concert for Anna, also celebrating its tenth year. In April 2008, Anna Lee Piroch was diagnosed with cervical cancer. The original Concert For Anna was put together by the local music community, of which Anna was an avid fan, as a way to help her pay her bills while she was unable to work as she battled the disease. Anna knew of the show to be held for her over Labor Day weekend 2008, and looked forward to attending. Sadly, in August 2008, Anna succumbed to the disease… But the music community would not let her spirit die. They came together in an incredibly moving act of kindness and held the show in her honor. When all was said and done, 17 bands had graced the stage that weekend, as well as numerous local businesses donating prizes, etc., and paid for Anna’s funeral expenses. That spirit of generosity and kindness in our local music community lives on in honor of our lost sister Anna, as a continual way to help others in our area in her name. Please help us every Labor Day weekend as we make a difference in someone’s life and ease the struggle that unfortunate circumstances can bring. We caught a partial set from Here and Now, After the Fall, & Creep. My cellphone had died and I left my camera in the car, so no pictures from this show. Here and Now is a great acoustic rock cover band featuring veteran scene musicians. After the Fall was up next, they are one of the top bands in our scene and didn’t disappoint. They played a few covers but hit us hard with their originals. Last on the bill was Creep. A band that I had never seen live and had been at the top of my wishlist. They were everything I had hoped for and more. They also had some surprises up their sleeves with a visit from Mark Lux, an announcement that they had sold out of their EP Lesson 3, and they let slip that they’re going to start working on a new album! We start out talking about the writing process and how circumstances allowed them to sit on the songs and go back to them later, we smoothly transitioned into the history of the band (yeah smoothly haha) and talking about about festivals and competitions… throughout the whole interview you get bits and pieces about their writing  & recording processes. I asked about the title of the album, and got a lot of different answers (haha). They were much more forthcoming about where the band name came from. Segment 2 starts out with a conversation about social media and websites and then we move on to learning a bit more about the pieces that make up FFITPL. Sammy or Dave? It was around this time that we learned that Chris embarrasses Fist Fight in the Parking Lot. We move on to name every band we could think of and even talk about Overlord Brom (Dethlehem) and his helmet. I also did a segment that I titled A Wright of Passage. In this segment I featured songs from Step 11, (kaj), and skell. the link between these songs is that Walter Wright sang lead vocals on all of them. You can hear the progression of his vocals and see how he got to where he is now with what I consider to be the best metal band in the Pittsburgh area. George “Yeti” Ivanusic formerly of Isotope, Impugn, and SuperXero comes out of the darkness and talks about his time in the music scene and what he has been up to since leaving SuperXero. For those of you that don’t know the history, SuperXero was the band that existed just before After the Fall. He talked about playing his first show with Sx opening for LA Guns. He talked about being in a band with John Lane, as well as, the SuperXero EP that the band had created with former bandmate Jared Greece when they were called Hybrid. This was more of a catching up with George than an interview. We touched on a ton of local musicians and their interactions with George over the years. He talked about Mike Palone and Keith Kweder of skell. Yeti talked about learning from Mike when Whiskey High was still together. They talk about how George became the guitarist that he is, Nick Catanese, and more. In the third segment George lets it be known that he is looking to join a band, even if it means being a guitar for hire.
